Why Roots Exists: A Different Vision for Healthcare
When people ask me why I started Roots Performance & Wellness, they usually expect a simple answer.
The truth is, there isn't one.
Roots wasn't created because I wanted to open another physical therapy clinic. It was created because I believe healthcare can (and should) be better.
After years of working as a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I found myself asking the same question over and over:
Why are we so often treating symptoms instead of helping people build healthier lives?
That question became the foundation of Roots.
Today, that vision can be summed up in three core beliefs.
1. Healthcare Should Treat the Whole Person
Throughout my career, I've had countless conversations with patients, friends, family members, and other healthcare professionals who all shared a similar frustration.
Healthcare often feels fragmented.
Patients are referred from provider to provider. Appointments feel rushed. Communication breaks down. Insurance limitations dictate treatment. Too often, people leave with another prescription or another referral but without truly understanding why they're experiencing pain or dysfunction in the first place.
While modern medicine has accomplished incredible things, I believe there is still room for a model of care that prioritizes time, education, prevention, and relationships.
At Roots, every visit is designed to understand the person—not just the diagnosis.
Pain rarely exists in isolation.
Movement, sleep, stress, nutrition, recovery, work, relationships, previous injuries, and lifestyle all influence how our bodies function.
When we understand those connections, we can create more meaningful and lasting improvements.
My goal has never been simply to help someone feel better… It's to help them become healthier.
2. Community Is Part of Healthcare
One of the greatest lessons I've learned since moving to Wilmington, NC is that community has a tremendous impact on health.
Whether it's showing up to a gym with friends, training for your first race, attending a fitness class, or simply surrounding yourself with people who value healthy living, community changes behavior.
It creates accountability.
It builds confidence.
It helps people stay consistent.
I've watched patients improve not only because of the treatment they received, but because they finally felt supported.
That's something I want Roots to become.
Not simply a clinic where people come when they're injured, but a place where people continue growing long after they've recovered. A place where education, relationships, and shared values create lasting health.
3. Movement Is More Than Exercise
This part is deeply personal.
If you know me, you know I've always loved movement: running, weightlifting, rock climbing, basketball, horseback riding, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Movement has always been a part of my life.
But the older I've become, the more I've realized that movement is about much more than fitness.
During seasons of stress, uncertainty, and difficult experiences, moving my body became one of the ways I stayed grounded.
It reminded me that I was capable, gave me confidence, and helped me process difficult moments.
I know I'm not alone in that experience.
Movement isn't just something we do to become stronger physically.
Sometimes it's what helps us become stronger mentally and emotionally as well.
That's why one of my favorite sayings is: Movement truly is medicine.
The Future of Roots
When I think about these three ideas—better healthcare, community, and movement—I don't see separate goals.
I see one philosophy.
My vision isn't simply to build a successful physical therapy clinic.
My vision is to build a healthcare model that helps people take ownership of their health before problems become chronic.
I want Roots to become a place where people feel heard. A place where providers work together instead of in silos. A place where education is valued just as highly as treatment.
A place where movement becomes a lifelong tool for health—not just something you do after you're injured.
Over time, I hope Roots grows beyond physical therapy into an integrated healthcare community where professionals from different disciplines collaborate to help people live healthier, longer, and more fulfilling lives.
That future won't happen overnight.
It will be built one patient, one relationship, and one conversation at a time.
Why the Name "Roots"?
The name Roots reflects the philosophy behind everything we do.
Instead of asking, "How do we make this symptom go away?"
We ask,
"Why is this happening in the first place?"
By identifying and addressing the root causes of pain, dysfunction, and injury, we can help people build stronger foundations for long-term health.
Because lasting health isn't about chasing symptoms.
It's about building stronger roots.
